Tell us about your journey in Cybersecurity, your ups and downs, and your accomplishments.

I was in my final year of my bachelor degree when covid hit which literally changed many things for me, I had a lot of time and there were so many uncertainties regarding my higher studies. One good thing that came out of it was that I focused on a few passion projects focused on data science. While I was working on it I got my exposure to learning how to adhere to privacy, securing data and plethora of other things, that’s where my fascination with cybersecurity began. I started exploring the field further, which eventually led me to pursue a master’s degree in cybersecurity.

Throughout my college journey I presented talks at many occasions. I worked on sharing my knowledge and experience through writing blogs for Thecybercrawler community. I joined BBWIC when I was studying at university and started contributing, it was my own way of giving back to the community. Throughout the highs and lows I felt great satisfaction in helping my juniors and others who are trying to get into cybersecurity

What drove you to Cybersecurity?

One thing you wish to change about the Cybersecurity domain?

As a person who is curious in nature, I found that cybersecurity is one of the fields which will provide me the means to continue learning and exploring. There never been a boring day, always something to look up and learn. My curiosity and passion for technology are what truly drove me to pursue this domain.

One of the things I’m very concerned about is bringing in freshers and how we will be training them. Currently there’s a huge gap in the hiring processes which could be very discouraging to the job seekers. Also the attitude of security as an after thought must be changed- it should be integrated into every stage of development and decision-making.

Do you think communities play a role in uplifting someone in this domain or does one need to play solo?

Yes definitely. Communities play a huge role in being there for you. I have met many wonderful people in community meetups who have given me solid advice and always rooted for me. It’s a great place to both encourage others and find inspiration yourself.

BBWIC, WiCyS are such communities where you can meet many like minded people. It’s a place where you can get many perspectives and many ah-ha moments!!

Have you done anything in the Cybersecurity domain that has enriched the diversity and inclusion scenario? If yes, mention it briefly.

As a member of the BBWIC community, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to improving diversity and inclusion in cybersecurity by mentoring women who are aspiring to enter the field. I set aside time to connect with a few of them regularly, offering guidance and mentorship.

We also had study buddy meetings fostering continuous learning and provided that little nudge we all need when we’re stuck. It’s a great pleasure to see people crushing their goals.

One challenge, according to you, women face in the cybersecurity domain. How did you overcome it?

When I first started researching cybersecurity, I noticed a worrying imbalance in leadership positions — with men significantly outnumbering women. I truly believe gender bias still exists in many scenarios.

That being said, I’ve been fortunate to have wonderful mentors, both at work and in college, who encouraged me in countless ways. Being surrounded by like-minded people and finding a community where I truly felt I belonged has made a huge difference in my journey.

How has your experience been with the Breaking Barriers Women In Cybersecurity Foundation?

BBWIC foundation has been a huge part of my career journey. I came to know about this community through Aarushi, who is also a member of this community. From the moment I joined, I knew I wanted to volunteer — the passion everyone has for supporting women and promoting inclusivity is truly inspiring.

Even though the members come from different parts of the world, it feels incredible to be part of such a united and purpose-driven group. I still remember talking with Saman and Aastha for the first time expressing my interest in joining the team, they were so open and welcoming, I felt right at home.

If you guys don’t know, now we have an India team as well. Super pumped to see what else we will be working on. Keep up the awesome work everyone!!
